Kinship beyond the immediate family. The state of being related to others.
Wahkotowin is a Cree First Nations clothing brand founded by a member of Alexander First Nation in Alberta, who has personally experienced substance abuse, violence, crime, and houselessness. Based in Victoria, BC for the past 15 years, Wahkotowin was established to support our local street community facing similar challenges.
Evan (Founder)
Evan Burnstick, founder of Wahkotowin Apparel, drew inspiration from his own recovery journey to establish an Indigenous clothing brand. Here is his story
My name is Evan Burnstick, a Cree from Alexander First Nation in Alberta, Canada. Born and raised off-reserve in Morinville, I moved frequently between there and Edmonton during my youth. Feeling disconnected from my culture and grappling with violence, drug use, and criminal activity, I sought solace through substance abuse and creating music. For years, I pursued a career in music, striving to embody the rockstar hip-hop artist lifestyle.
Seeking a fresh start, I relocated to Vancouver, BC, and later settled in Victoria, BC, where I had family support. Despite these changes, substance abuse remained a significant challenge.
After enduring years of addiction and facing life-threatening situations, I discovered recovery in Victoria. Through fostering connections, engaging with community, and reconnecting with my Indigenous heritage, I embraced a transformative journey.
This pivotal experience inspired me to establish Wahkotowin Apparel, an Indigenous clothing brand rooted in cultural pride and resilience. Today, Wahkotowin Apparel stands as a testament to my commitment to overcoming adversity and supporting others on their paths to recovery and empowerment.
Mathias (Brand Ambassador)
Stax is a Brand Ambassador and an integral part of our core team and family here at Wahkotowin Apparel. Here is his story.
My name is Mathias Millette, known by my stage name, Stax. I was born and raised in Victoria, BC (lək̓ʷəŋən Traditional Territory) on Vancouver Island. My family's roots stem from Beecher Bay (Sc'ianew) and Ahousaht.
I found a passion for music at an early age and started writing poetry at 14, which quickly evolved into writing lyrics and battle raps. Although I ventured into battle rapping at school and later in Victoria, BC, my music and passion for the scene were sidelined by my addiction, and for nine years, I was lost.
Now over three years sober, I have been steadily working on my craft putting out music to uplift our youth, and speaking truth of my past into every bar and verse I write. Composing music in hopes to inspire and motivate anyone who hears it.
